West Haddon Community Show

West Haddon Village Hall and All Saints' Church are reviving this traditional event, last held in 2018, on 27 September 2026.

We know that it has been a challenging year for growers, but there are also flower arranging, home produce, art, and handcraft categories, as well as children's classes. We are sure that the people of West Haddon will rise to the occasion!

Guidance

A and B classes: in general, judges are looking for exhibits which are clean, even in size, and free of blemish.

Carrots and beetroot: trim the tops to 5cm
Carrots, beans and courgettes: the straighter, the better
Leafy brassicas: remove outer leaves
Culinary herbs: label either individually or with a list
Chilli plant: use an appropriately-sized, clean pot, with no roots visible. Judges are looking for healthy leaves and fruit.
Impressive weed: leave the roots on.

C class: Judges will inspect all allotments on the same day, judging on absence of weeds, tidy edges, variety and health of produce, and overall tidiness. No penalty for empty beds/rows where these are tidy.

D classes: D1 Judged on variety and quality of specimens, not arrangement. All other D classes, judges are looking for clean, even-sized blooms, free of blemish and pests.

E classes are assessing the arranging of flowers, not the growing. So although exhibitors may use their own home-grown flowers, they may also use flowers which they have bought or been given.

E1: posies should be pretty and not too big, and have fragrance.
E2: arrangements should be appropriate to the size of container, and attractive to look at.

F classes:

F1: bold colours, reasonable-sized and smooth stone (not a rock) with decoration appropriate to the age of the exhibitor
F2: cress grown to a reasonable size, a neat edge to the eggshell (unless the design requires otherwise), and entertaining decoration appropriate to the age of the exhibitor.
F3: the miniature garden may be 3D or 2D. Imaginative use of the chosen medium with recognisable features that might be found in a garden.
F4: bought or home-made cupcakes or fairy cakes, iced and decorated with assistance appropriate to the age of the exhibitor.

G classes:

G1: exhibitor's own recipe, with vegetables slice or grated in accordance with the exhibitor's preference. To be judged on appearance as well as taste - garnish may be appropriate.
G2 to G6: Clean jar and lid, appropriate label stating contents and date. Jar filled almost to the brim, no wax disc. Good colour and flavour.
G2 and G4: spreadable set, even distribution of fruit.
G3: no cloudiness, firm set.
G6: fruit/vegetables cut to a size suitable for spreading.
G7 to G14: judged on appearance as well as taste.
G7: Even colour and size, with rise rather than spread. Soft, light texture, not doughy.
G8: Even colour and size, distinct crust and squidgy inside.
G9: Even colour, even rise, straight sides. Filling jam, curd or spread. No cooling-rack marks, top dusted with icing or caster sugar.
G10: Even colour, top dusted with caster sugar and marked into individual slices. Good crumb without losing its shape, buttery taste.
G11: Shortcrust or flaky pastry, snipped to allow steam to escape, even-sized rolls with an appropriate amount of filling for the pastry. Good savoury flavour.
G12: Shortcrust pastry base, crispy bottom, neat sides, attractive presentation. Label to indicate filling. Good savoury flavour.
G13: An attractive loaf with a good, even rise. Soft texture, not doughy.
G14: Even colour. Label to indicate flavour. Moist but properly cooked. Even distribution of fruit.

H class: Even colour and size. One egg to be broken by judges to check yolk colour and freshness.

I classes: Clean bottle, wired or capped as appropriate, with appropriate label stating contents. Good colour and flavour.

J classes: Picture should be mounted but not framed – use a stiff backing as picture will be displayed using stick-on velcro. Include title.

K classes:

K1: Item should be 3D and may be knitted, crocheted, sewn, or made of pompoms (if you come up with another way you won't be penalised!). Eyes and trimmings securely attached, tight seams with no stuffing showing.
K2: Item should be knitted, crocheted or sewn (including patchwork) with tight seams, secure trimmings and a good line.
K3: Includes tapestry, cross-stitch, freehand and machine embroidery, either using a bought kit or made from the exhibitor's own design. Neat reverse with secure finishing and no long threads transferring colour to different areas of the work.
K4: No chips or splinters; good use made of material. If the item is for practical use, made and finished to an appropriate standard.

Rules

All exhibitors must be residents in the civil parish of West Haddon. All exhibitors in the F classes (children) must be under 16. Under-16s may also enter all other classes.
Each exhibitor can win only one award per class. Awards are Gold (3 points), Silver (2 points) and Bronze (1 point), with points added across the classes for each exhibitor to determine the trophy winners.
A, B, D, E, G, H, and I classes: exhibitors must provide their own containers or plates for staging their entries, labelled with their name on the reverse.
A, B, D, E, G, H, and I classes: exhibitors must mark their entry card with the sticker provided by the organisers, if they do not wish their entry to be included in a raffle hamper.
A, B, and D classes: the exhibitor must have grown the parent plant from seed, cutting, root, bulb or set, or looked after the parent plant for at least 6 weeks prior to entry.
C class: entry is automatic with no entry fee required.
E class: flowers and foliage may be bought or home-grown.
F classes: the child or young person exhibiting the entry must have made the item with adult supervision appropriate to their age.
G, I, J, and K classes: entries should not be more than a year old and the exhibitor must have prepared everything entered under their name.
Any complaint must be lodged with the Show Secretary in writing by 2.45pm on the day of the show, with a deposit of 50p. If upheld the deposit and class entry fee will be refunded. The decision of the show organisers is final.

Organisation

On show day, you must collect your entry cards from West Haddon Village Hall before staging your entries at either venue. The administration of entries is complicated so we cannot accept late entries on the day.

You can stage your entries from 9am, and all staging must be complete by 11.30 prompt. Please allow plenty of time if you are entering multiple classes! Stage your entries with the card face down, so judges do not see your name, only your exhibitor number.

The judges’ and stewards’ briefing will take place once staging is complete, with judging finished by 1.30pm. Doors will not open for public entry until 2pm, to allow time to process the results and tidy up after the judging.

We are charging all adults, including exhibitors, 50p admission. In exchange you will receive a raffle ticket – keep it safe, as you will need to show it at the other venue to gain free admission there, and it is also your raffle ticket for a hamper made up of produce exhibited at the show.
